Migraines hurt. While symptoms vary from person to person, the pain associated with these headaches is always unpleasant. But there is hope for those who've given up on their own coping strategies, and it's literally within arm's reach. Migraines can be reduced in frequency by regular massage sessions, which decrease anxiety, heart rate and amounts of the stress hormone cortisol. The two most common acute migraine triggers are stress and neck muscle spasms. A preventive measure for migraine sufferers: Stay hydrated, and find a plan that works best for you.

Massage methods should be done on an individual basis. Some find it helpful, but (others) can have their migraines triggered by manipulation of the neck. In addition, the many complications that go along with migraines — for instance, food allergies — should all be addressed. Feel a headache coming on? You may be able to prevent it from turning into a migraine by trying simple massage techniques.

Antidepressants might be worthless for treating low back pain, suggests a new review that found no evidence to support using the drugs in this way. Yet, up to 23 percent of U.S. physicians report prescribing antidepressants to patients with low back pain. Antidepressants are considered second- or third-line agents in the treatment of low back pain. It’s very common to be depressed with chronic pain, so that may be when clinicians are inclined to try a medication for both the chronic pain and the depression. Five studies reported no differences in pain between patients receiving antidepressants and those receiving a placebo; however, two studies reported less pain in patients receiving antidepressants. Seven studies reported no differences in depression in patients receiving antidepressants who also had low back pain compared to patients receiving placebo. Reviews like this are important for patients so they can learn about what options are available and which ones are effective. There are so many treatments and it’s very confusing for patients and clinicians alike.

Pain can be a debilitating sensation. It can easily cripple you from doing your normal everyday activities. That is why people, as much as possible, try to avoid it. Being aware of this, a lot of people now are trying the effectiveness of herbal alternatives to relieve pain. One must remember that your doctor knows best. Before taking any type of medicine whether it be herbal or pharmaceutical, you should always consult your doctor. He or she is the only person who knows all about the status and condition of your body and what kind of substances will do good or harm to it. Herbal alternatives can be taken just like your pharmaceutical drug and do not require you to stuck needle in your body. Because of these reasons, herbal alternatives are more preferred than other alternatives. It has also been known that herbal alternatives to pain relief do not really have harmful side effects. This claim has not been clinically proven though there has been no news of anyone experiencing such effects.

For decades patients with osteoarthritis resigned themselves to what seemed to be the body’s inevitable breakdown. People grow old, doctors told them. Hips and knees wear out. What can you do?

The latest study about osteoarthritis has lead researchers to believe it as one disease you can intervene with. Intervention is increasingly needed. Osteoarthritis is incurable, and treatments for it are inadequate. Most patients must rely on oral pain relievers, which provide only temporary or partial relief, or invasive surgery to replace stiff and damaged joints.

The belief that osteoarthritis is just a natural result of the aging process and the wear and tear of the joint and muscles has been in question through the latest research. Genetic studies are providing a number of other clues to potential treatments. These types of findings may be preliminary, but they do mark a new beginning. As scientists peer deeper into the genetic underpinnings of osteoarthritis, they are finding something completely unexpected.

Back injury is largely preventable, and, if you catch it early, before it develops into something more problematic, easy to cure too. (...)

<o :p></o>Back injury is largely preventable, and, if you catch it early, before it develops into something more problematic, easy to cure too. The unique thing about back pain is we don't always know which particular structure [is injured], like when you rupture an ACL in your knee we can clearly diagnose that particular ligament and attack that part of the injury. With lower backs it can be a little more difficult to pinpoint the tissue that's causing the problem: ligaments, discs, bone, muscle, tendons — all those things can cause back pain.

Preventive exercises are typically not exercises people do in a gym. There are a few other things besides core strengthening and lifting properly that can lead to good back health:

• Quit smoking. "Chronic smokers have increased healing time and impaired tissue quality because of the blood flow and the nicotine and chemicals in the body."

• Lose excess weight. "Obesity contributes to low back pain."

• Eat properly. Proper nutrition is necessary for back health. "Making sure you are taking in enough calcium for bone structure [and] protein for muscle structure, all those things are important."

• Get some regular exercise. "If you're someone who sits all day at a computer vs. someone who's on his feet walking, moving, a sedentary lifestyle can lead to instances of back injury, typically because you cause imbalances, weakness and tight muscle from sitting in a particular position."

• Maintain good posture. "Sitting in a sustained [bad] posture for eight hours a day, five days a week for 10 years, 12 years — your body does accommodate in a bad way."

The fentanyl patch is a widely used painkiller that delivers a narcotic up to 100 times more powerful than morphine through the skin for three days at a time. (...)

<o :p></o>The fentanyl patch is a widely used painkiller that delivers a narcotic up to 100 times more powerful than morphine through the skin for three days at a time. It was originally intended for cancer patients and others with severe chronic pain who were already taking potent opiate-based painkillers. But the FDA said the patch is also being prescribed to many who don't really need it — even people suffering from nothing more than headaches.

The Food and Drug Administration today issued a new safety warning for a potent painkiller that comes in a patch and has been linked to hundreds of accidental overdose deaths, in many instances because doctors have mistakenly prescribed the narcotic to the wrong kinds of patients. A heating pad applied near the patch — or even a hot shower — can cause an overdose. As part of the safety warning, drug makers will be required to develop a safety guide for patients, which will be dispensed with the prescription.<o :p></o>

Too much fentanyl can cause life-threatening breathing problems, and even death. The drug is widely known by its brand name, Duragesic, but nowadays generic versions account for most of the estimated 4.7 million prescriptions written annually. All forms of the patch should be used with great caution. Whether it may a simple headache of more, proper prescription and caution is needed to have a healthy and more effective pain relief.

When it comes to back pain, knowledge is power. (...)

When it comes to back pain, knowledge is power. The more you know, the more you can be in control of your own treatment, and Muscle Balance Therapy™ is one of the most powerful tools you can use to help you take control of your situation. A basic fact about back pain is that most treatments fail because they begin at the end—that is, they merely focus on the pain, which is just a symptom of a larger problem.

Muscle Balance Therapy is an innovative approach to eliminating back pain once and for all, starting with a careful yet simple assessment of all the muscles that affect the stability of your hips, pelvis, and spine—from both a strength and a flexibility perspective. In a sense, what Muscle Balance Therapy™ is asking you to do is a very "unbalanced workout" to get your body back into proper balance. Once your muscles are more balanced and you're feeling better, you will be able to return to your workplace or to your favorite activity with the confidence and security that you need to live a full and productive life.

A word of caution: If you feel even minor back pain, you should take it very seriously—your body is telling you that something is not right. Failing to address this situation now will likely result in a higher level of pain and having to work much harder and much longer to get yourself back to a pain-free state.

Radio frequency ablation, where heat energy destroys or stuns the nerves of a painful joint, is a developing therapy for chronic arthritis-related back pain. In the right situation, this approach may be welcome — though usually not permanent — relief. In an outpatient procedure, doctors apply radio frequency energy either continuously for one to two minutes to destroy the pain-causing nerve tissue; or in pulses to stun the nerves.

Pulsed radio frequency may be as effective in pain relief as the continuous method, but the relief generally does not last as long. In theory, since the tissue is stunned and not destroyed, the pulsed treatment is safer and not expected to offer diminishing returns when repeated.

Definitive research has not accurately quantified success rates. But for patients with arthritis-related back pain that hasn't responded to other treatments, radio frequency ablation is an option.
