Inject Your Pain Away!
Sydney researchers have discovered a way of regenerating spinal discs damaged by injury or disease that could potentially cure half of all cases of chronic back pain. Sciatica, "slipped disc" or degenerative disc disease can be very painful, especially to the type that can affect the lower back and leg or an affected person.
St George Hospital's Orthopedic Research Institute have found that a naturally occurring human growth factor called bone morphogenetic protein 7 (BMP-7) not only stops the degeneration - or death - of disc cells, but also spurs the production of new cells that replicate the cushioning effect of the discs. This breakthrough research can greatly help those who suffer from degenerative disc disease. BMP's are already known for their capabilities of inducing new bone formations, and through this studies, perhaps the effect and flare ups of degenerative disc disease can be lessened and prevented.
If ever, this non-surgical back pain relief technique would help cut down on days spent in hospital and time off work, and anything that can avoid surgery should be looked at for the benefits of everyone. Although it is still in trial state, this new drug can bring hope to those who have this disease. However, the drug is not likely to be on the market for at least five years.
