Recent online polls suggest that most individuals will not discontinue their pain relief methods based on the possible side effects they may encounter. This new information shed light on the modern consumer, and the outlook most people take when deciding to take a drug. Over half of those who responded to the survey stated they would not stop taking a drug if additional health risks were discovered.
Additional questions in the poll also show that most people would prefer to take a pill than seek alternative means of dealing with pain, which raises questions on the availability of pain medication. Alternative means to pain relief include:
· All natural supplements
· Acupuncture
· Massage
· Yoga
· Exercise
Pain relief that is as simple as taking a pill drives people away from taking proper care of their bodies, thus decreasing their overall health, making the need for pain killers greater. In this endless cycle of treating pain, only a quarter of people surveyed would seek alternative pain management if medication was not an option.
As the baby boomer population ages, and slowly retires, new advances in medicine will need to be made to keep up with demand. 75,000,000 Americans will begin retiring in the next five years, increasing the need for prescription drugs, and new treatments of pain. But, putting the emphasis on medication may not be the best path to take. Keeping the body healthy as we age is important to our all round good health. However, most pain relief drugs do not offer any health benefits, other than alleviating sore muscles and joints.
